5 Tips For A Fresh Start

A teacher's day is never the same as the day before, so we need to make sure we are in the best possible shape to face the challenges ahead and that begins as soon as our eyes open. So here are my five actions for kick starting your day before the school bell rings.
Action 1: Lemon water before your morning caffeine fix.
Drinking a glass of lemon water is great for your body when you first wake up. You probably think I am crazy for suggesting anything other than a coffee, but it really is worth saving your first buzz for your arrival at school. With breakfast, drink a glass of lemon water and your metabolism will thank you (skip the lemon if that's not your thing but have the water!)
Action 2: Leave out the news.
Why start your day off with negative vibes? Just why? Yes, it is important to know what is going on in the world, but why absorb it first thing in the morning? We have access to the news 24 hours and on demand, so just let your body and mind wake up and have some 'you time'. You'll get a thumbs up from your Mental Health. Try setting up a music playlist with power tracks to get your ball rolling.
Action 3: Don't check emails...don't!
I know many teachers (including myself) who have email connected to their phones. We all know I am talking work emails right? Right. We know why we need them - our working day is so busy and you would have 1500 emails to sift through by the end of the day if you didn't connect. But...there are times for checking these...and first thing in the morning is not the time! So make sure Do Not Disturb is turned on and enjoy being work free before you get into school.
Action 4: Get up with your alarm.
Snooze is baaaaad... You're awake anyway so you might as well get up. Tell yourself that you can have a little rest later in the day if you need to. Place your alarm clock at the other side of your bedroom so you have to get up to turn it off - that way you can't snooze! Phones are great but they are far too conveniently placed on our bedside cabinets. Discipline yourself! You can do it!
Action 5: Get up one hour sooner.
I heard a great saying that waking an hour earlier is another hour lived. I love this! To make positive changes you need to think slightly differently...there ARE two 5 o'clocks in the day! By waking up sooner we can have a bit of Me-Time. You might get up and switch your alarm off, go downstairs (since you're already up), drink your lemon water and listen to some of your favourite songs to get you mentally prepared for the day. I guarantee you'll be smiling as you soak up the peace, quiet and calm. You most probably will think about your to-do list for the day ahead, and that's okay! But at least you know that your body is being hydrated in the right way and you are allowing yourself time to plan ahead and not rush head on in.
